FUNCTIONAL LANDSCAPING
Functional Landscape Design That Protects Your Home & Property
Standing water doesn’t just threaten your foundation — it ruins lawns, kills landscaping, breeds mosquitoes, and turns parts of your yard into unusable mud after every storm. And fixing it usually means covering your property in exposed pipes and bare gravel that hurt your curb appeal. At Advanced Basement Waterproofing, our Functional Landscape Design service solves both problems at once. We engineer the drainage and grading needed to move water away from your home and the low, pooling areas of your yard, then disguise it inside dry creek beds, decorative stone, rain gardens, and clean landscaping that looks like it was always meant to be there. The result is a property that stays dry and usable — and actually looks better than before. We design and install these solutions throughout Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut.

Most homeowners think they have to choose: live with water pooling against the foundation or collecting in the middle of the yard, or accept an unattractive drainage system bolted onto the property. Functional Landscape Design removes that trade-off. We start with the same engineering that drives all of our
waterproofing work — proper slope, water capture, and a clear path for runoff to exit — and then we build that system into features that read as landscaping, not plumbing.
That might mean a French drain hidden beneath a bed of decorative river rock, a downspout line that empties into a planted rain garden, or a dry creek bed that drains a low spot in the lawn while becoming a focal point of your yard. Every solution is shaped around your specific property, soil, and the way water actually moves across your lot during a heavy New England rain.
Homes across the Pioneer Valley and Hartford County face constant pressure from seasonal storms, snowmelt, and freeze-thaw cycles. Functional Landscape Design gives you a way to manage all of it — protecting your foundation, reclaiming the wet areas of your yard, and ending up with a property that looks better than when we started.
What Is Functional Landscape Design?
Functional Landscape Design is the practice of combining drainage and water management with intentional, attractive landscaping — so the system that keeps your home and yard dry also enhances your property instead of detracting from it. Rather than installing visible pipes and bare gravel, we integrate proven water-management principles into features like dry creek beds, rain gardens, decorative stone borders, and graded planting beds.
In short: it’s drainage engineering wearing a landscaper’s finish. You get a dry foundation and a usable, water-free yard, with the curb appeal of a professionally designed property.

What We Integrate Into Your Landscaping
Decorative dry creek beds that channel and slow stormwater runoff
Hidden French Drains beneath river rock or planting beds
Rain gardens that capture and absorb roof and surface water
Regrading of low, pooling areas that collect standing water in the lawn
Dry wells & catch basins concealed below grade
Downspout integration that carries roof water safely away from the home
Channel & trench drains with low-profile decorative grates
Decorative stone & gravel borders along the foundation and bed lines
Permeable pathways & pavers that let water drain instead of pool
Window well landscaping that protects and beautifies below-grade openings
Every feature is selected and placed for how it performs and how it looks — keeping your property dry while adding lasting value.

FAQ's
Functional Landscaping FAQ's
What is functional landscape design?
It’s drainage and water management built into attractive landscaping. Instead of visible pipes and bare gravel, we hide the system inside features like dry creek beds, rain gardens, decorative stone, and graded planting beds — so your foundation stays protected, standing water disappears from your yard, and your property looks great.
Can this fix areas of my lawn that pool water when it rains?
Yes. Pooling and standing water in the yard is one of the most common problems we solve. We regrade low spots and route the water into drainage features — like a dry creek bed, rain garden, or hidden drain — that move it away and double as landscaping, so you reclaim that part of your yard instead of fighting mud after every storm.
How is this different from purge scaping or a regular French drain?
Purge scaping regrades the land to slope water away, and a French drain captures and redirects subsurface water. Functional Landscape Design uses those same engineering methods but finishes them as decorative landscaping, so the solution protects your property and enhances its appearance at the same time.
Will the drainage still work as well as standard drainage?
Yes. The performance comes from the engineering underneath — proper slope, capture, and outflow — which we design exactly as we would for any drainage project. The decorative materials sit on top of a fully functional system, so you don’t trade protection for looks.
Can you integrate this with waterproofing work I’ve already had done?
Absolutely. We can tie exterior Functional Landscape Design into your existing sump pump, French drain, or waterproofing system so everything works together, then finish the visible portion of the yard attractively.
What areas do you serve?
